Britney Spears' disastrous performance at last year's MTV music awards was supposed to herald a comeback.

It was anything but.Well, now it looks like she may be getting a second chance.The back-from-the-brink pop princess is in negotiations with MTV to appear at the Sept. 7 Video Music Awards, a spokeswoman for the network said Tuesday.Sexy and newly toned Spears, 26, is already appearing in promotional ads for the show with host, comedian Russell Brand.

"You are Britney Spears, right?" Brand says in one promo. "I'm not dreaming this am I?""No, this is for real. This is me," the troubled pop star responds as a 9,000 pound elephant cavorts behind the duo.

The prancing pachyderm also has a cameo in the second ad, in which Brand tells Spears to remember his last name, "because I think pretty soon it's going to be your surname, Britney Brand." The big question is whether Spears is ready to turn out a stunning performance after bombing so badly last year.

"If Britney performs at the VMA's and she pulls it off, it will be the greatest comeback kid story ever. It's not that hard to do better than last year but she can't just do ok, fine or mediocre. Her comeback performance has to be big," says E! Online gossip columnist Marc Malkin.

Spears is also working on a new album that she says will have a more "urban" sound.She tells OK! magazine, "This is my best work ever," and admits that she would be game to work on a new movie project if, "I can find the right movie."One day a time, Brit.
